Post subject: Do I need to repower if I want to go 10 knots  PostPosted: Jul 24, 2015 - 06:30 PM

I'm looking for a Cape Dory 28. The one I thought I wanted escaped before I could see it. There is one with the 100HP engine that looks good and works fine but, here is my question. How slow does it go? I would like to cruise at 10 knots if that is that possible. If I were to repower is there a market for the old original engine with 1900 hours.

If want to go 10 knots, you will need to repower. My friend had the 100hp and could only get around 7 tops. I have the Volvo 165hp and it will do 10 all day.

I own a 1986 CD cruiser with a 100 hp Westerbeke and it will only cruise at 6 3/4 to 7 kts. I am looking at re-powering to a Yanmar 240hp to gain a cruising speed above 10kts.

Not sure what the market is for a used marine diesel. I will be replacing a 100 hp Westerbeke with only 1300 hrs on it. Would love to know if there is a market for it.

Maybe toss an add on Craigslist and see what happens. Lots of folks would like to have a spare engine on hand.
